Reye syndrome
hepatitis + encephalitis following viral upper respiratory tract
infection with H/O large dose of aspirin
- age: children and young adults
- obtundation rapidly followed by coma
- 15 - 85% mortality (from white matter edema and demyelination)
CT findings:
- initially (within 2-3 days) small ventricles
- later progressive enlargement of lateral ventricles and sulci
- markedly diminished attenuation of white matter
diagnosis by liver biopsy: fatty infiltration
